WYOMING

Verified Grizzly Bear Killed Livestock
- Verified a grizzly bear killed sheep on a private ranch on the Wood River southwest of Meeteetse.

Monitoring and Research

Bear Management (Captures, Relocations, and Removals)
- Captured and relocated one adult male grizzly bear from private land north of Jackson to the North Fork of the
Shoshone river drainage west of Cody. This bear had been in a residential area for three consecutive nights and
obtained pet food from an out-building.


April 13 - 20 Weekly Summary

MONTANA

- Captured and released - 4/19/2012 Adult Male Grizzly bear relocated into Coal Creek drainage of the Flathead County. The bear was trapped for livestock conflicts.

WYOMING

- Captured and released a grizzly bear from the Wood River near Meeteetse, to the North Fork
of the Shoshone River west of Cody. This bear had been around a residence for several days.

- Captured and removed a grizzly bear from the Wood River that was involved in a sheep
depredation the previous week. This bear had a history of sheep depredations and had been
relocated in the past.

- Captured and released a grizzly bear from Pat O’Hara Creek north of Cody to Long Creek,
Shoshone National Forest. This bear had been frequenting a calving pasture with newborn
calves for over a week. This bear was moved to prevent livestock damage.

April 21 - 27 Weekly Summary

IDAHO

Bear Management (Captures, Relocations, and Removals)
- a 3 Year Old Female Grizzly was put down in the Driggs, Idaho area. The bear was a repeat offender that was originally relocated form the North Fork of the Shoshone River area near Cody, WY. Last year the bear was in apple orchards, this time the bear was frequenting garbage cans on the Wyoming/Idaho border. A large part of problem was residents did not follow food storage ordinances put in place in Teton County to prevent this. Non the less the bear was conditioned to human food and no matter where it was relocated it would have become another problem so officials put the bear down.

MONTANA

- Captured and released 4/28/12 A sub adult male grizzly bear for livestock/Human conflict. Bear was relocated into Whale Creek Drainage of Flathead County.

WYOMING

-Verified Grizzly Bear Killed Livestock
- Confirmed a yearling heifer that was killed by a grizzly bear north of Cody.
Monitoring and Research

Monitoring and Research
- Began research trapping operations along the Absaroka Front between Thermopolis and Cody. The purpose of the trapping is to radio collar a sample of bears to determine habitat use, survivorship, reproduction, causes of mortality, and movements.

April 28 - May 5 Weekly Summary

MONTANA

Bear Management (Captures, Relocations, and Removals)
-Captured and released 5/2/2012 Yearling Black Bear released in the Kootenai NF-Rock Creek area. Bear was trapped and relocated
for human conflict.
-Captured and Released 5/3/2012 Orphaned male Black Bear in Wall Creek WMA of Madison County.



WYOMING

Verified Grizzly Bear Killed Livestock
- Verified a heifer that was killed by a grizzly bear north of Jackson.
- Verified a grizzly killed steer calf west of Big Piney.

Monitoring and Research
- Captured an unmarked adult male grizzly bear in the Grass Creek area on 5/3. Bear fitted with
VHF collar. Released on site.
- Documented a bear in the Willow Lake area near Pinedale.
- Documented a bear west of Big Piney.
Bear Management (Captures, Relocations, and Removals)
- Captured a young male grizzly bear near Dubois for getting into birdfeeders and garbage. The
bear was relocated to an area northwest of Cody.

Outreach and Education
- Presented information to Park County Commissioners on grizzly bear issues around Clark
and how it pertained to their decision for the future of the Clark Landfill.
- Repaired an electric fence system at a private in-holding in the Upper Green.
- Worked with a landowner near Clark to electrify a pen surrounding cows and calves that a
bear had shown interest in.

May7 - 11 Weekly Summary


WYOMING

Verified Grizzly Bear Killed Livestock
- Brian DeBolt verified one 3-year-old cow was killed by a grizzly bear on the East Fork of the
Wind River near Dubois.

Monitoring and Research
- Captured an adult male grizzly bear and an adult female grizzly bear with three yearlings in the
Absaroka Mountains southwest of Meeteetse. Both were collared for future monitoring.
Bear Management (Captures, Relocations, and Removals)
- Brian Baker (Dubois Game Warden) captured an orphaned female cub-of-the-year in the town
of Dubois. The bear was in extremely poor condition and died despite efforts to tube-feed and
administer fluids intravenously
.

Outreach and Education
- Dusty Lasseter and Tara Teaschner gave presentations to Cody area sixth grader students at
the annual Natural History Days in Sunlight Basin.
- Dusty Lasseter gave bear educational talk to 185 elementary kids at the Powell Armory.
- Zach Turnbull gave a Predator Attack Team/Safety presentation to Tip Top Search and
Rescue in Pinedale, WY.
- Mike Boyce attended the Buffalo Valley homeowner’s association meeting to discuss attractant
storage and avoiding bear/human conflicts in residential areas.

May 12 - 18 Weekly Summary

-Captured and released 5/15/2012 Sub Adult Grizzly bear for human conflict. Released in Trout Lake Area - Flathead County
-Captured and Released 5/17/2012 Sub Adult Grizzly bear for livestock conflict. Released in Trout Lake Area - Flathead County

- Verified a grizzly bear injured calf north of Cody. The calf was euthanized due to the injuries.
- Verified grizzly bear killed calf west of Meeteetse.
- Verified grizzly bear killed calf north of Cody.

- Captured a sub-adult male grizzly north of Cody for killing livestock, relocated to Bailey Creek
in Teton National Forest.

Research and Monitoring
- Captured an adult male grizzly bear and a sub-adult male grizzly bear in the Absaroka
Mountains southwest of Meeteetse. The sub-adult male was collared for future monitoring.

Outreach and Education
- Verified the presence of a grizzly bear below Elkhart Park, north of Pinedale, WY. Made
several contacts with hunters, outfitters, and individuals recreating in the area to inform them of
the recent activity.
- Presented a bear presentation to approximately 140 kindergartners and first graders.
- Presented a bear safety talk to 10 employees at Park County Weed and Pest.
- Presented four bear safety educational programs to Cody Middle School students.
- Set up an educational bear booth at the Cody Dano Outdoor Expo and talked to approximately
100 people

May 19 - 26 Weekly Summary

WYOMING
Verified Grizzly Bear Killed Livestock
- Verified one calf that was injured by a grizzly southwest of Cody. Calf was euthanized due to
the injuries.
- Verified one calf that was killed by a grizzly bear north of Dubois.
- Verified one calf that was injured by a grizzly north of Cody. The ranch will try and treat the
calf.
Research and Monitoring
- Wrapped up grizzly bear research and monitoring trapping in the Absaroka Mountains
southwest of Meeteetse. Five grizzly bears were captured in the four week effort. All were
tagged and four were radio collared for future monitoring.
- Documented a female grizzly with two yearlings in the Gros Ventre.
- Documented a female grizzly with three yearlings north of Cody.
- Documented a female grizzly with two cubs of the year west of Cody.
- Documented a female grizzly with one cub of the year west of Cody.
- Verified observations of a grizzly bears north and northwest of Pinedale in habitat where bears
are uncommon.

Outreach and Education
- Provided bear information and advice to a homeowner in the Upper Green River, north of
Pinedale that had a grizzly bear frequenting their property.
- Gave an informational bear safety talk to Sublette County Visitor Center summer volunteers.
- Provided bear-resistant garbage cans to a homeowner in the Upper Green River, north of
Pinedale.
- Helped Tom Smith from Alaska Fish and Game present bear safety information to instructors
for the National Outdoor Leadership School.
- Staffed an educational display at the Jackson Hole Antler Auction.
- Presented bear safety information to Teton County Weed & Pest employees.
- Staffed an educational display at the DANO Outdoor Expo in Cody.
- Gave a bear educational talk to about 50 2nd grade students at Sunset School in Cody.
- Presented bear educational programs to 6th grade students from the Cody Middle School.
